In 2005, Lynne Stewart, a prominent civil rights attorney, was convicted on four counts of conspiracy to aid and abet terrorism. She is currently serving a 10 year sentence for these alleged crimes that many citizens feel were wrongfully charged.
Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani mother of 3, went missing in 2003. Five years later, a reporter informed her family that she was being held at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Both the US and Afgani government denied that they were keeping Siddiqui. She has more recently been transerred to Carswell Women’s prison in Texas where she is serving an 86 year sentence in solitary confinement.
I am ashamed to admit that I had not heard anything of either of these stories. I am also ashamed at my government for allowing this injustice.
